Top Picks of Edinburgh Fringe 2017

It’s Fringe time! The staff kitchen is abuzz with show planning while the kettle boils. Luminate's director Anne Gallacher has been through the guide with creative ageing in mind. Here are her top picks for shows this year:

Lear at Dance Base is performed by a real icon of the dance world, Valda Setterfield, who is now in her 80s and worked with Merce Cunningham for many years.

Slap and Tickle @ Zoo

Performance artist Liz Aggiss has performed at Luminate in the past and this is her latest show. She sets out to challenge stereotypes around ageing and you can expect a memorable performance! She pulls no punches in a different way...

Translunar Paradise @ the Pleasance

This toured as part of Luminate in 2013 and if you didn't see it then I'd really encourage you to book. It's an exquisite piece of physical and mask theatre that explores ageing, love and loss. I've rarely experienced such transfixed audiences as I have with this show.

Wired @ Army at the Fringe

Not one on a theme of ageing, but written by Lesley Wilson who was one of the artists selected for our older emerging artists lab earlier this year. The play was already written at that point, but her experience at the lab gave her the confidence to take it forward, find a producer and raise some money to bring it to the Fringe.

Looking at dementia this year:

Descent @ the Gilded Balloon

Originally co-produced by Luminate for our 2015 festival and is being restaged for this year's Fringe. A powerful play that doesn't hold back about the challenges facing a family experiencing dementia, but ultimately it's about the love that glues them together.

The Nature of Forgetting @ the Plesance

New to us but Theatre Re have a great reputation and the show has been picked for the British Council showcase...

Over the Garden Fence @ Greenside

Another mystery show, recommended to us by fellow creative ageing practitioners. Looking forward to giving it a try!
